Police find no harassment of Asian women at U of Michigan

Allegations of a man stalking and harassing East Asian women students at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor have not been confirmed by police.

The Michigan Daily reports police have identified the man and concluded he has done nothing criminal and does not pose a threat.

A poster on Medium wrote that the sophomore has been befriending East Asian women and then stalking and harassing them.

“He DMs them asking them on dates under the guise that they’ve shared a class together even when they haven’t, and also stalks them in person,” the anonymous poster wrote. “He takes pictures of East Asian women on campus and posts them on his private story.”

The discussion has also spilled on to Reddit.

“This gives off creepy to the extreme,” one poster wrote on Reddit.

“There are so many men who have an East Asian woman fetish that is so uncomfortable. Yet you call them out and they gaslight you into thinking they’re nice human beings… disgusting,,” said another.

Tenured-tracked faculty from the Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Department on campus also got involved, bringing it to the attention of the University Provost Laurie McCauley and Martino Harmon, vice president of student life.

Harmon responded.

“I have been in communication with Provost McCauley and we both want to thank you and the Core Faculty of Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies for bringing this matter to our attention,” Harmon wrote. “Clearly this reported behavior is of serious concern and we are in the process of receiving information from r … Once we have additional information we will get back to you and the members of the group.”

The police have since said there is not enough evidence to move forward with charges.

“After a thorough investigation, an individual was identified, and at this time we don’t believe them to be a threat to the community,” Melissa Overton deputy chief of police at the University Police Department, said to the Daily Michigan.
