Biden nominates Richard Verma to deputy secretary of state position

President Joe Biden has nominated former U.S. Ambassador Richard Verma as Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, The Economic Times reports.

Verma was born in 1968 and grew up in Pennsylvania. According to a White House press release, Verman earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Lehigh University and his law degree at American University.

During the Obama administration, he was the United States Ambassador to India and Assistant Secretary of State for Legislative Affairs. He is currently the Chief Legal Officer and Head of Global Public Policy at Mastercard.

According to the Business Standard, if confirmed by the Senate, Verma would be the first Indian American to have that level of seniority at the State Department.
