Teenager shot by police in Tracy, CA, CAIR demands transparency

CATEGORIES

A Muslim teenager remains hospitalized in serious condition after being shot by a Tracy police officer. After a disturbing video showing the aftermath of the incident was posted by the Tracy Mountain Review, the Sacramento Valley/Central California office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Sacramento) is calling for transparency from the Tracy police.

According to KTVU, officers in Tracy, Caliofrnia, responded to reports of “suspcisious circumstances” at Foxtail Way and Silver Tail Place. The caller alleged that one male subject was chasing another male with a knife.

Tracy police say that when an officer arrived he asked the teenager to drop the knife. The teenager allegedly did not comply and continued to advance toward the teenager with a knife.

“The suspect failed to follow the commands as he advanced toward the officer. Fearing for his safety and the safety of those in the area, the officer discharged his duty firearm, striking the individual,” Tracy police said on Facebook, according to KCRA.

The Tracy Mountrain Review has published a video showing a woman sitting by what appears to be a body of the teenager before police ask witnesses to back up. According to KTVU, the 17-year-old is currently in serious but stable condition at the hospital. He is expected to survive.

“We are monitoring this extremely disturbing incident and demand that law enforcement authorities operate with full transparency and conduct an independent investigation that will swiftly make public all the facts in this case,” said CAIR-SV/CC Executive Director Basim Elkarra, in a press release.
