The city of Honolulu plans to fix the broken and aging sidewalks in Chinatown, KHON 2 reports.
“We need the sidewalk corrected to current standards so it’s safer for Kupunas because we have a lot of seniors shopping in Chinatown come at the need that are safety. So, I’m very excited. We don’t mind the inconvenience. Take however long it needs,” Chu Lan Shubert-Kwock, President of Chinatown Business & Community Association told KHON 2.
Many of the sidewalks have been uprooted by trees in the area. The Chinatown community has been waiting on repairs for a long time. According to Hawaii News Now, the city will start work on the sidewalks this Monday.
“It’s years worth of backlog, and you’re right, the businesses downtown and in Chinatown recognize more than the rest of us know that this work is critically needed,” Ian Scheuring, a spokesperson with the mayor’s office, said, according to Hawaii News Now.
Some business owners have expressed concern that the work will be done during the weekdays from 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Those hours are often primetime for Chinatown businesses. The city has promised to try and keep repair crews moving.
