The Indian American behind President Biden’s State of the Union

President Biden basked in the glow of mostly positive reviews of his State of the Union Address last week. The architect behind the speech is his main speechwriter, Indian American Vinay Reddy.

Reddy worked alongside senior White House advisers Bruce Reed, Mike Donilon and Anita Dunn on the speech, CBS News reported. The group gathered at Camp David in the days leading up to the address to put in the finishing touches.

Born and raised in Ohio, Reddy’s parents immigrated from Karimnagar in the Indian state of Telangana. He attended Miami University before getting his law degree from the Ohio State University College of Law, reported The Quint.

He previously worked with Biden’s speechwriting team during his vice presidency as well as during the presidential campaign. He’s also worked with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, as Vice President of Strategic Communications.

Reddy is most comfortable behind the scenes and tends to stay out of the limelight, Politico reported in 2021.

You may not know Vinay – he’s not on Twitter (smart!) and doesn’t seek the limelight,” Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau once tweeted.

Biden focused his speech on his willingness to work with Republicans in search of bipartisanship.

“The president focused his conversation on the issues that overwhelmingly all Americans care about and want to see Washington address, whether it’s the economy, inflation, healthcare, entitlement programs,” said Kurt Bardella, a Democratic strategist, to the Guardian.

It provided a sharp contrast to Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene who yelled “liar” from the back of the hall.

“They’re stuck on the cultural issues. The cultural issues have certainly done well for them in the past but they’re not enough in and of themselves to deliver, particularly if there’s a good economy and people have jobs, Bardella said.
