Disney has released the official trailer for its new movie Chang Can Dunk which will debut on March 10.
The film follows Chang (Bloom Li), an unpopular high schooler who loves basketball and Pokémon. After a video mocking him goes viral online, Chang bets his high school’s all-star basketball player, Matt (Chase Liefeld), that he will be able to dunk a basketball by the night of the last home football game. He wagers a rare Pokémon card as part of the bet.
Chang Can Dunk was created by filmmaker Jingyi Shao and is his directorial debut.
“I was really inspired by early ’90s coming-of-age films, but specifically sports-coming-of-age films like ‘Mighty Ducks,’” Shao said in an interview with Variety.
Shao hopes that the film will inspire young Asian American teenagers.
“My 16-year-old self could have really used this film,” Shao told Variety. “He really needed to watch this. At the time, he was struggling to believe in himself and struggling to believe in his dream.”
The film also features performances from Zoe Renee, Ben Wang, Dexter Darden, Eric Anthony Lopez, Nile Bullock, Mardy Ma and Angel Oquendo.
Chang Can Dunk will begin streaming on March 10 on Disney+.
