Hmong American pop-up restaurant opens in Twin Cities

CATEGORIES

A new Hmong American pop-up restaurant will bring Hmong fusion food to people around the Twin Cities in Minnesota.

According to The Star Tribune, the restaurant is headed by Chef Yia Vang who’s noodle-focused restaurant Slurp is closing on March 29. The pop-up, called Mee-Ka, will open in early April at 901 W. Lake St.

Mee-Ka is the Hmong word for American. Vang said he named the restaurant Mee-ka because he used to prefer certain American foods over certain Hmong foods as a child.

“At times, we would look at the food that they make, and we’d be like, ‘Oh, gross, I don’t want to eat this stuff anymore. I want Mee-ka food. I want American food,’” Vang told Sahan Journal. “What we were saying to our mom was, ‘We just want to belong.’”

The food served at the pop-up will be a blend of American and Hmong food. For example, Sahan Journal reports that Mee-Ka will serve an “After School Special” that is a take on spaghetti and meatballs. Instead of meatballs, it will feature ramen Hmong sausage, parmesan cheese and a spicy Thai basil sauce.

It is unclear when the pop-up will end, but The Star Tribune reports it will likely serve food for a few months after its April opening.
