Star-studded Joy Ride to open CAAMfest in San Francisco

This year’s 41st edition of the CAAMfest is opening with a real-crowdpleaser in San Francisco.

Joy Ride starring AshleyPark, Sherry Cola, Oscar-nominee Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu kicks off the festival on May 11 at San Francisco’s iconic Castro Theater.

“These last few years have deeply altered us and we are only starting to journey towards each other again,” Festival and Exhibitions Director Thúy Trần said in a statement sent to AsAmNews. “CAAMFest 2023 is a call to gather so that we may witness each other’s transformations, restore our bonds, and bask in our joys.”

The film from Lionsgate opened to rave reviews at South by Southwest in March. It’s scheduled to be released nationwide on July 7.

Four close friends, including one adoptee as played by Ashley Park, go on a trip to Asia for an identity-finding, birth parent-searching trip overseas. This teenage comedy is directed by Adele Lim, best known for writing Crazy Rich Asians.

This is Lim’s directorial debut.

Also joining the cast are Ronnie Cheng from Crazy Rich Asians, Lori Tan Chinn (Awkwafina is Nora From Queens), David Denman (Greenland), Annie Mumolo (Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar), Desmond Chiam (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Alexander Hodge (Insecure), and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians).

CAAMFest runs May 11 – 21. More information can be found at CAAMfest.com.
