Netflix has canceled “Bling Empire” and its spin-off show “Bling Empire: New York,” Deadline reports.
The original series followed a number of Asian billionaires living in Los Angeles, California. Its spin-off followed a group in New York City.
The first season of “Bling Empire” aired in January 2021. The show ran for a total of three seasons before Netflix announced the cancellation. “Bling Empire: New York” only had one season before it was canceled.
Some Asian Americans criticized the show for glorifying the lives of the wealthy Asian elite. A few of its cast members, however, hoped the show would highlight deeper issues.
“For most people who see our lives from the outside, it seems quite perfect and all we do is have fun and argue. But for me, I want people to watch season three and realize that we are delving deeper into our insecurities, particularly me, as I struggle with my own identity and the issues which come with that”, Kane Lim, one of the show’s stars, told AsAmNews’ Erin Chew in an October 2022 interview.
