Arrest made in hate crime attack on elderly man in San Diego

Police in San Diego say they’ve connected a man already under arrest on unrelated charges to a brutal attack on an elderly Laotion man, reports NBC7.

Authorities charged Jesus Baucer, 35, in the assault against 81-year-old Mark Sanouvong at South 47th Street and Franklin Avenue.

It happened a week before Christmas in 2021 near Porter North Elementary School in what investigators describe as an unprovoked attack.

Fox5 reports that Sanouvong crossed southbound past the school when an attacker police believe is Baucer severely beat him into the middle of South 47th Street and Ocean View Boulevard, stopping traffic.

Police say the arrest follows “extensive work.”

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations in San Diego, the victim was asked “are you Chinese or Vietnamese” before the attack occurred.
