Kilauea Volcano erupts again. Warning issued for residents

The Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii erupted again for the first time since January Wednesday, prompting federal authorities to issue an alarm to residents.

CNN reports the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory raised the alert level to red for warning as it closely monitors the situation.

“At this time there is NO indication that populated areas are threatened,” the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency said.

Right now the main concern appears to be volcanic gas.

“Large amounts of volcanic gas — primarily water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) — are continuously released during eruptions of Kilauea volcano,” the USGS said, reported NPR.

Known as volcanic vlog, like smog except from a volcano, the haze has been seen downwind and is considered a health hazard to people, livestock and crops.

A live picture of the eruption from the US Geological Survey can be seen below.

Hawaii’s Volcanoes National Park remains open 24 hours a day and is expected to attract large crowds who can see the eruption from a distance. Visitors are warned to stay out of closed areas.

“Witnessing the crust of an active lava lake being dragged into seething fountains is unforgettable. While an eruption is an exciting experience, keep in mind you are observing a sacred event,” the NPS said.
