Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed India Monday and is headed to the United States for his meeting with President Joe Biden, reports the Hindustan Times.
Indian Americans across the country rallied in support of his pending arrival while others called for a boycott.
Modi has been a polarizing figure and some have drawn comparisons to Donald Trump Critics blast him for policies that they say oppress religious minorities in India such as Muslims.
Supporters point to tax revenues that have increased as much as 20% in some areas after he doubled the tax base, reports the Economic Times.
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby said the U.S. looks forward to welcoming the Prime Minister.

“India will be a critical strategic partner for the US in the coming decades,” he said, according to Outlook. “The visit will strengthen the shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous and secure Indo-Pacific.”
Connect to India reports supporters rallied in 20 states across the U.S. Sunday including several hundred in Washington, DC. Rallies were also held in Houston, Boston, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami, Tampa, Dallas, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco, Columbus, and St Louis.
