San Francisco’s Chinatown has replaced the red lanterns that were destroyed by the severe winter storms.
According to ABC 7 San Francisco, there are now 180 new red lanterns adorning the streets of Chinatown.
The new lanterns are the result of months of fundraising. In April, business owners in Chinatown began asking for donations to replace the tattered lanterns, NBC News Bay Area reports.
“They’re iconic. It’s part of us. It’s part of Chinatown. You kind of have to have it,” Maria Szeto, the owner of Canton Bazaar, told ABC 7.
Eva Lee, co-chair of the Chinatown Merchant’s Association also told ABC 7 San Francisco the lanterns provide a sense of security to the Chinatown community.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony is happening Tuesday to celebrate.
