Filipino American Megan Althea Obrero Paragua has won a youth chess title.
According to PhilBoxing.com, Paragua, 10, won an outright Woman Fide Master title (WFM) at the recent XXXIII Pan-American Youth Chess Festival 2023 Standard competition. The young player is the niece of chess grandmaster Mark Paragua.
After drawing with U.S. player Audrey Keyan Li in her last round, Paragua ended her tournament with 7.5 points on six wins and three draws, The Manila Times reports.
“I’m so happy with my latest performance and achievement,” Paragua said, according to PhilBoxing.com.
Her family expressed their pride.
“Megan Althea Obrero Paragua got her an outright Woman Fide Master title at XXXIII Pan-American Youth Chess Festival 2023 Standard competition. Thank you Lord for all the blessings,” said her father Jan Vincent Paragua, according to PhilBoxing.com.
Paragua is currently a fifth grader at Columbia Grammar Preparatory School in New York. Previously, she placed third in the Weeramantry National blitz chess tournament of state champions 1800-2199 Section, The Manila Times reports.
