Suni Lee opts out of World Championships selection camp

Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee has opted out of USA Gymnastics’ camp for world championships selection.

“Suni was invited to camp but has opted not to participate,” USA Gymnastics said on social media, according to NBC Sports.

Lee has been battling kidney issues since March 2023. She returned to competition in August, performing on beam and vault. The 20-year-old is hoping for a full comeback but her training schedule changes day-to-day because of the medication she is taking for her kidneys.

“I have been in and out of the gym just because there’s just so many doctor’s appointments, and I’m taking a lot of medication, so it kind of varies every day,” Lee told Olympics.com last month. “I could wake up very swollen some days and not be able to put my fingers inside my grips. It’s really difficult to kind of work through, but on the days that I can do stuff and I am feeling good, I try and take advantage of that and just get everything done.”

Jess Graba, Lee’s longtime coach, told USA Today that she has been training all four events recently.

“She’s training pretty good when we can train,” Graba said. “It’s more of a balancing act. They’re still monkeying with the medication to try to get it so she reacts the same way each day. As they’re adjusting the medication, then some days aren’t very good so we have to adjust our training and sometimes we don’t train that day.”
