A man attempting to hike 21 miles in the Grand Canyon in less than 24 hours has died of unknown causes, reports CBS News.
The 55 year old has been identified as Ranjith Varma of Manassas, Virginia.
At this time it has not been confirmed his death is heat-related.
Temperatures on the day of his hike ranged from 85 on the South Rim to 105 degrees in the Inner Canyon on the bottom, the National Park Service reported.
“National Park Service search and rescue personnel responded to the call via helicopter,” NPS said in their statement to ABC News. “Given the location, specialized helicopter maneuvers were employed to allow rangers to assume care of the hiker, initiating advance life support efforts.”
