Shohei Ohtani out for the rest of the season with oblique injury

Shohei Ohtani will miss the remainder of the 2023 season with the Los Angeles Angels due to a right oblique strain.

Angels beat writer Jeff Fletcher and other journalists reported Friday that Ohtani had cleared out his locker.

According to MLB.com, the Angels placed Ohtani on the 10-day injured list Saturday. He sustained the oblique injury during batting practice on Sept. 4. Although his status was day-to-day, he has not featured in a game for the Angels since sustaining the injury.

Ohtani is known for his abilities at the plate and on the mound. But his season as a pitcher for the Angels ended even earlier in August after he injured his elbow. According to ESPN, Ohtani is now expected to have surgery for a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow as soon as possible.

Angels general manager Perry Minasian addressed reporters on Saturday. According to Fletcher, he said an MRI of Ohtani’s oblique on Friday determined that he would be out for the rest of the season. He is unsure when the player will have surgery on his elbow.

Ohtani’s contract with the Angels ends after the 2023 season. Fans, journalists and analysts have been speculating about where he will end up in 2024. For now, his locker sits empty, with Angels fans wondering if he will return to it next year.
