Portland, one of the largest cities in Oregon, is hosting its first-ever Asian American night market this weekend. Festivities got underway Friday and will continue on Saturday night.
Organizers are calling the event the Legendary Makers Market. According to KGW8, it is the largest Asian-centered event in Portland’s history with over 125 Asian vendors participating.
The event is being held near Southeast Second Avenue and Alder Street from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., KOIN reports. Entrance is free but there are $10 fast pass tickets available for purchase that enable attendees to skip long lines.
The goal of the Legendary Makers Market is to share Asian American culture with the city of Portland. The market will showcase Asian food, music, crafts, art, media and much more.
“See us as fully dimensional people. We’re not just our food. We do media, we do wellness, we tell stories in all sorts of different ways and hopefully people can appreciate that,” Tom Sollitt, co-founder of Asian American Town, told KOIN.
The market also signifies unity.
“Asians as a whole, we all have our separate holidays, separate cultures but this is the first time we can all come together and celebrate together…” Camden Tomomatsu, owner of Tomomochi, told KGW8.
