Biden to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday

President Joe Biden is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday in San Francisco, California. The meeting is part of the week-long Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference.

According to CNN, White House aides see the meeting as a positive sign amidst months of rising tensions between the U.S. and China. However, many don’t have high expectations about the potential outcomes.

The meeting will cover a wide range of important topics. According to The New York Times, two senior advisers told reporters during a call Thursday that the list of topics would include election interference, Taiwan, the war in Ukraine and Israel.

The advisors, speaking under the condition of anonymity, told reporters Biden will likely warn Xi about interfering with U.S. elections. The goal is still to stabilize the relationship between the two countries.

“Right now, neither the United States nor China are entering the meeting between President Biden and President Xi expecting to significantly improve or reset the relationship,” Bonny Lin, director of the China Power Project and senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told CNN. “Rather, the meeting will be about managing and stabilizing the bilateral relationship, improving communication, and reducing misunderstandings before they occur.”
