Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll has won the National League Rookie of the Year award.
According to NBC News, Carroll is the first Asian American to be named Rookie of the Year in Major League Baseball. The 23-year-old’s father is Irish American and his mother is Taiwanese American.
“Definitely not the biggest guy out there on the field, but my ability to not be that guy and still be able to impact the game, that’s one piece of it,” Carroll told reporters on Monday, NBC News reports. “Not too many Asian Americans in this circumstance — I think that’s another piece of it that I hope to inspire.”

During the 2023 season, Carroll had 25 homers and 54 stolen base, NBC News reports. He became the first player of Taiwanese descent to play in a World Series.
In an interview with MLB.com, Carroll said he was proud to represent Taiwan.
“My grandparents lived over there and my mom was born over there. Just bringing some pride and attention to Taiwanese baseball and that side of my heritage, I take a lot of pride in that,” he said.
