As 2023 draws to a close, some film buffs are already beginning to think about the 2024 Oscar contenders. Past Lives, Celine Song’s debut film, could be a Best Picture nominee.
Past Lives follows Nora and Hae Sung, two childhood friends who are separated when Nora’s family leaves South Korea. The pair reconnect nearly 24 years later in New York City.
Gold Derby, a website that makes Oscar and Emmy predictions, believes that Past Lives will be nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. They do not have Song in their predicted five Best Director nominees. However, they believe the 97 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating for the film is a good sign.
Variety has included the Past Lives on their shortlist for Best Original Screenplay but not for Best Picture. The Hollywood Reporter believes it could be a Best Picture nominee, and Vulture gives it a half chance.
The 96th Academy Awards will be held on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Nominations will be announced on January 23, 2024.
