Suspect arrested in fatal hammer attack on SoCal college campus

One man is under arrest after authorities say he attacked a woman in her 60s with a sledgehammer as she collected recyclables.

The attack happened at El Camino College on Christmas Eve in Torrance, CA near Los Angeles, reports Patch.

Police arrested 40-year-old Jeffrey Davis, but it’s unknown what motivated the attack.

ABC7 reports say police describe him as a homeless man who they’ve encountered in the past. When they spotted him in security footage, they promptly arrested him nearby.

According to the Daily Mail, the victim has been identified as 65-year-old Junko Hanafusa. Neighbors say she frequently walked her dog and collected recyclables. One of her neighbors reportedly plans to adopt her dog.

Hanfusa was taken to the hospital where she died on Christmas Day.

Davis is being held without bail.
