American Born Chinese featuring Michelle Yeoh and Daniel Wu will not be coming back for a second season on Disney+, reports several news outlets.
Variety was the first to report the cancellation, citing a source close to the situation.
The Wrap turned it its own sources and also reported the news.
Producers of the series plan to shop the program to other networks in hopes of bringing it back. Critics gave the series rave reviews for its creativity and storytelling, but the show was unable to gain a big enough audience, according to sources.
The sci-fi fantasy series is based on the popular graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang of the same name. It revolves around a mythical character Sun Wei-Chen (Jimmy Liu), the son of the Monkey King, who is trying to escape his nemesis Niu Mowang (Leonard Wu), the Bull Demon, while also maneuvering to navigate life on earth.
Daniel Wu plays the Monkey King. Yeoh stars as the Goddess of Mercy. Ben Wang plays Sun Wei-Chen’s best friend.
The show involves wonderful, choreographed fight scenes, themes of growing up and identity and a long line of notable Asian American performers including Ke Quy Kwan, Stephanie Hu, Jimmy O’Yang and Ronnie Chieng.
It is executive produced by Kelvin Yu, Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan, among others and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton.
