Saturday evening, the Hollywood Creative Alliance announced the winners of its 2024 Astra Film Awards. Although Warner Bros. Pictures Barbie led with eight wins, followed by Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer with four, the Keanu Reeves vehicle John Wick: Chapter 4 took home three wins and Celine Song won Best First Feature. The ceremony took place at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles and were hosted by comedian Rick Glassman.
John Wick: Chapter 4 won Best Action Feature, Best Editing, and Best Stunts. Hayao Miyazaki won Best International Filmmaker for his The Boy and the Heron.
Other people of Asian descent who won included Hailee Steinfeld (part Filipino) for Best Voice-Over Performance in Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Kazu Hiro (with Sian Grigg, Kay Georgiou, and Lori McCoy-Bell) for Best Hair and Makeup in Netflix’ Maestro. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse also won Best Animated Feature and Best Visual Effects
Barbie took home the most awards of the evening with eight wins including Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song, Best Production Design, Best Publicity Campaign, and Best Casting. Universal Pictures’ Oppenheimer scored four wins, Best Director, Best Score, Best Sound, and Best Cinematography.
