SF to host its first official Diwali celebration in November

San Francisco’s Indian American night market which resumes this May will also be the site of the city’s first Diwali celebration, Bhangra and Beats announced on Instagram Friday morning.

It’s scheduled to be held November 15 as part of the second season of the night market in Downtown San Francisco.

“The popularity and success of the Bhangra and Beats Night Market shows that San Francisco is hungry for cultural events that lift up small businesses and showcase the amazing diversity of our city,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle. “We need many creative strategies to make Downtown a 24/7 neighborhood, and bringing performers, vendors, and small businesses to come together in a spirit of joy and celebration is one of them”

Some 30 vendors are expected to offer Indian goods and handcrafted jewelry made by local artists. In addition, they’ll be 30 stages featuring entertainment.

This year Bhangra and Beats will be held May 10, July 12, September 13 and November 15.

Known as the Festival of Lights, Diwali is a celebration of good over evil and is practiced by those of the Hindu, Sikh and Jain faiths.
