Korean American tennis player Jessica Pegula has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open.
Pegula, the no. 5 seed, beat Emma Navarro, the no. 20 seed, in straight sets: 7-6, 6-3. The first set went to a tie-break but Pegula found her groove afterward.
“What I did best is what I do best,” Pegula said during her on-court post-match interview per Tennis.com. “I hit pretty hard and flat and when I get my chances I try to change directions and I try to move in.”
According to WTA Tennis, Pegula is the first American player to reach three consecutive Miami Open quarterfinals since Serena Williams. She is also one of the most consistent players at WTA 1000 events.
Pegula will face Ekaterina Evgenyevna Alexandrova, who is ranked no. 15, in the quarterfinals.
