Korean American Mitch White pitcher Mike White has returned to the Bay Area to play for the San Francisco Giants.
According to MLB.com, the Toronto Blue Jays traded White to the Giants for cash considerations.
White, whose mother, according to The San Francisco Chronicle, is Korean, grew up in San Jose and played college baseball at Santa Clara University. He played for the Minor League Baseball affiliate teams of the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2020-2022 before being traded to the Bluejays.
On Tuesday, White told reporters the trade “couldn’t have worked out better.” He now gets a chance to play for the team he adored growing up.
“Being from San Jose, that was the team,” White said, per The Mercury News. “Especially those years from ’10 to ’14 were awesome. … Obviously all those guys were sick.”
White added that pitcher Matt Cain was one of his favorite Giants players.
The 29-year-old will add depth to the Giants’ bullpen. Giants manager Bob Melvin said he expects White to pitch multiple innings once he has adjusted to the Giants locker room.
“He hasn’t pitched in a little bit here, but typically he can bring us some length,” Melvin said per MLB.com. “He’s been stretched out before he got here — three or four innings or something like that — so that’s probably the role he’s in right now. We’ll see what kind of shape he’s in after he throws [Tuesday]. We’ll see where we go with it.”
