The Japanese embassy is responding to President Joe Biden’s recent comments which labeled the country as “xenophobic.”
“It is unfortunate that some of the comments were not based on an accurate understanding of Japan’s policies,” the embassy said in a statement to POLITICO. “We have raised this point to the U.S. government and explained Japan’s positions and policies once again.”
According to BBC, Biden made the comment during a campaign event this week.
“Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble. Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants,” he said.
The White House later clarified that the comments were intended to highlight the United States’ immigration policies. It claims that the comments were not meant to undermine the relationship between the U.S. and Japan.
The Japanese Embassy said it would continue to work with the “U.S. to further strengthen our bilateral tie.”
