A fourth arrest has been made in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was shot and killed in Surrey, Canada, last June.
According to Reuters, the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) arrested 22-year-old Amandeep Singh. The suspect has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Singh is an Indian national and has lived in Brampton, Surrey and Abbotsford. The other three suspects are also young Indian nationals who have been living in Canada for several years.
A few months after Nijjar was murdered outside of a Sikh temple, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau formally accused the Indian government of being involved with Nijjar’s death. Nijjar was an activist who advocated for the creation of Khalistan, an independent Sikh state that would be formed in Punjab, India.
According to The Guardian, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s external affairs ministry, says that the two governments have been communicating about the case. However, Jaiswal claims Canada has not provided evidence that India was involved.
Jaiswal also says the accusation has been impacting Indians in Canada.
“Our diplomats have been threatened with impunity and obstructed in their performance of duties,” Jaiswal said. “We are having discussions at the diplomatic level on all these matters,” he said.
