Oakland mayor Sheng Thao has ‘nothing to hide,’ according to lawyer

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, through her lawyer, says that she was unaware of any investigation until FBI agents raided her home Thursday morning, and that she will “cooperate fully”.

On 5:30 a.m. Thursday morning, FBI agents searched Thao’s home, and left hours later with multiple bags and boxes. Authorities also raided the nearby home of Andy Duong, whose family owns California Waste Solutions. According to authorities, the search centered around allegations of campaign donation violations.

In an email statement acquired by both SFGATE and NBC Bay Area, Tony Brass, Thao’s representing lawyer, said, “Mayor Thao is ready, willing and able to cooperate fully with federal investigators. She has nothing to hide, It’s unfortunate that she has had to endure the bad optics of having this search warrant executed on her home.”

Brass continued by stating that “She would have cooperated with this investigation without the need for this search. She will continue to do the work Oakland expects from their mayor and provide the federal government with whatever information they are seeking. We have no information that she is or will be the target of this or any investigation.”

The raid on Thao’s house comes after the Alameda County Registrar confirmed that a group attempting to recall Thao had acquired enough signatures to place a recall election against her on the ballet.

The FBI confirmed Friday that no arrests were made during the search. The FBI has not commented on the reason for the raids when they were reached out to by SFGATE, NBC Bay Area, and AsAmNews. It is currently unknown if all the searched on Thursday are linked
