A Texas woman allegedly attempted to drown a 3-year-old Palestinian American girl.
According to NBC News, the incident occurred on May 19 at a pool in Euless. Elizabeth Wolf, 42, allegedly questioned where the child and her 32-year-old mother were from and made racist statements.
Around 5:44 p.m., police responded to a disturbance at the pool. When they arrived, witnesses told them that a very intoxicated Wolf had attempted to drown the 3-year-old girl, The Guardian reports.
The Council on American Islamic Relations said in a press release that the mother was wearing a hijab and “modest swimwear” at the pool. They say she was watching her children swim in the shallow end when Wolf allegedly confronted her. She then jumped in the pool and attempted to drag the children to the deep end.
“We are seeing a new level of bigotry here where a person deeply believes they get to decide, based on religion, spoken language, and country of origin, whose kids deserve to stay alive and whose don’t,” CAIR-Austin Operations Manager, Shaimaa Zayan said in a statement. “I was devastated to know that the attacker got a bail bond out of jail the next day after the arrest. We ask for hate-crime probe, a higher bail bond, and an open conversation with officials to address thisalarming increase in Islamophobia, anti-Arab, and anti-Palestinian sentiment.”
