Hawai’i Governor Josh Green signed 16 bills into law on Friday, which are aimed at improving fire safety. The laws come as Maui continues to recover from the deadly fire in Lahaina last year.
“These legislative measures are crucial in enhancing our state’s resilience, safety and inclusivity,” said Governor Green in a statement. “By addressing these important pillars of disaster prevention, mitigation and management, we are working to ensure that all residents of Hawai‘i are better protected and prepared, especially during times of crisis.”
According to the Hawai’i Tribune Herald, the laws will reestablish a state fire marshal and improve resources during emergencies for those with limited English proficiency.
One bill, House Bill 2193 will establish an illegal fireworks task force, Kaua’i News Now reports. Another, SB 2693, seeks to limit charity fraud after emergencies like the Lahaina fire.
