Netflix announced this weekend it will be releasing a new biographic film entitled Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli.
The documentary will focus on the life and career of the acclaimed director behind the Academy Award winning RRR and the hit franchise film Baahubali.
“S.S. Rajamouli is a visionary whose imagination has altered the course of Indian cinema,” said Anumpama Chopra, a journalist and former Mami Mumbai Film Festival director, who narrates the film. “His craft has captivated audiences around the world. His epic narratives have redefined storytelling standards. We are thrilled to work with Netflix and Applause Entertainment to highlight his extraordinary career and his lasting influence on the world of film.”
RRR in 2023 became the first Indian film to win an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Naatu Naatu. The film franchise Baahubali : The Beginning originally came out in 2015 and has been followed by Baahubali 2: The Conclusion in 2017 and has inspired three novels, a comic book, a video game, two animated series and an upcoming TV series.
Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli will feature behind the scenes footage as well as commentary from such notables as James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War) and Karan Johar (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, My Name Is Khan).
Chopra also talked extensively with Rajamouli for the making of this film.
Applause Entertainment, and Film Companion Studios partnered with Netflix for this project.
“His uniquely inventive narrative style has revolutionized Indian filmmaking and we are excited to present his artistic development from his humble beginnings to ‘Baahubali’ and ‘RRR’,” said Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment. “This partnership demonstrates our dedication to creating authentic Indian stories for a global audience.”
Modern Masters: SS Rajamouli will be released on Netflix on August 2.
