Alex Rose is first Pacific Islander to qualify for athletics final at the Olympics in 68 years

Samoan athlete Alex Rose has qualified for the discus final at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

According to Pacific Media Network, Rose qualified out of Group B with a 62.88 meter discus throw. He is the first Pacific Islander to qualify for a field event final at the Olympics in 68 years.

“I don’t even know what to say. I did it. I can’t believe it. I think I’m the first Pacific Islander in history to make a final in athletics in the Olympics. I don’t even know what to say,” Rose said per WOOD TV.

This is the third Olympics Rose has participated in. He believes he has a shot at making the podium during the final on Wednesday.

“I’m going to attack the finish and try to throw as close to 70 meters as I can,” he said per WLPP. “Three years ago, I made zero finals. This is my third international final, my first Olympic final. I belong here. I have literally built myself up for a decade to be ready for this moment. I’m ready.”

The discus final will begin tomorrow, August 7, at 11:25 a.m. PST.
