Smithsonian to showcase complexity of DC’s historic Chinatown

A new exhibition in Washington D.C. next month entitled “Sightlines: Chinatown and Beyond” will showcase Asian American connections and contributions to the city, in a presentation by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center (APAC).

The exhibition runs Sept. 7, 2024, to Nov. 30, 2025, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, 800 G Street NW, Washington D.C.

“Installed in a gallery overlooking G Street NW in D.C.’s historical Chinatown neighborhood, the Sightlines exhibition provides glimpses into the complexity and depth of Asian American connections to the city,” the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center said in its description.

”The featured stories highlight examples of cultural production that interpret elements of Chinese, Korean, and Javanese heritage or express coalitional Asian American and BIPOC identities,” it said.

The exhibition’s broader themes are “Making Place, Transforming Tradition, and Visualizing Identity,” and will include artwork, material culture, images, and other graphic materials drawn from the Smithsonian collections and local lenders, the center said.

Planned events include an opening celebration, gallery talks and hands-on activities.
