New York State Assemblymember Jenifer Rajkumar has announced that she is running for New York City controller in 2025.
According to The New York Daily News, Rajkumar made the announcement with the launch of her campaign website. Around a month ago she had opened a campaign account to begin fundraising.
“I’m in it for the New Yorkers who toil 25 hours a day, eight days a week, and can’t afford life-saving health care or quality education,” she said in her campaign video.
Since 2021, Rajkumar has represented a south Queens district, amNY reports, making her the first South Asian woman elected to the state assembly.
According to the American Kahani, Rajkumar is known for her iconic red outfits, earning the nickname “the lady in red.” She has used her position to empower the AANHPI community, helping establish New York’s Asian American and Pacific Islander Commission. She also played a pivotal role in making Diwali a state school holiday.
