Tran-Steel Congressional race now rated toss up

CATEGORIES

Democratic challenger Derek Tran is gaining momentum in his hotly contested race with incumbent Michelle Steel (R-Orange County).

The San Francisco Chronicle has named the race one of several that could tip the balance of the house from red to blue and the Cook Political Report has moved the District 45 race from leaning Republican to a toss up.

Democrats need a net gain of four seats to gain the majority, a scenario that is much more likely after Vice President Kamala Harris injected new enthusiasm into the party.

On Monday, the Los Angeles Times gave Tran its endorsement.

“He has aligned himself with other Democrats who are strongly pro-small business,” wrote the Times in its editorial. “In contrast to Steel, he is a believer in helping Americans gain quality, affordable education and healthcare — and respecting their freedom to make their own medical and family decisions.”

Steel has a top rating from the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

A spokesman for Tran says the campaign has seen “end of quarter momentum” in its fundraising while the number of volunteers has spiked so much it has opened a second campaign office.

A video Steel posted on Instagram Monday emphasizes her support for IVF treatment saying she turned to IVF to have “two wonderful daughters”

“I’ve always supported women’s access to IVF and will fight to defend it,” she said.
