The Native Hawaiian convention is set to begin this week. According to the Hawaii Tribune-Herald, it will be the first time the convention is held on the island of Hawai’i, often referred to as the Big Island.
The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement is hosting the convention at the Hilton Waikoloa Village from September 17-19. According to KHON 2, there will be around 100 breakout sessions covering topics like education, housing and self-determination.
There are over 1,600 registrants so far, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports.
“We are excited to offer the residents of Hawaii Island the chance to take part in the Native Hawaiian Convention, the premier gathering of Native Hawaiians,” said CNHA CEO Kuhio Lewis in a press release. “With its deep historical roots, Hawaii Island serves as a reminder of our past, guiding us as we move towards the future.”
The convention will host local businesses and vendors.
“A major highlight will be the mākeke, open daily from 8 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., which showcases local vendors and Hawaiʻi-owned businesses. We also will have a Fashion, Food & Culture Showcase featuring some of Hawai’i’s top designers, chefs and musicians on Wed., Sept. 18, and a live KHON debate from the convention featuring Hawai’i Island mayoral candidates on Thurs., Sept. 19,” Kuma Hina said per KHON 2.
