Authorities say the remains found at a private property in Two Rivers, Wisconsin, belong to 3-year-old Hmong American Elijah Vue. According to WBAY, Vue had been reported missing since February.
Two Rivers Chief of Police Benjamin Meinnert said at a press conference that the remains were discovered on September 7 in a “thick, wooded area” around 3 miles from where Vue went missing, CNN reports.
“This is not the outcome we had hoped for,” Two Rivers Chief of Police Benjamin Meinnert said per the Herald Times Reporter. “The family is devastated. Our community is devastated.”
Vue was reported missing by Jesse Vang, boyfriend of Elijah’s mother, Katrina B. Baur. According to WBAY, Vang told police he noticed the boy was missing after he woke up from a nap at his apartment on Mishicot Rd. Baur was staying at her residence in Wisconsin Dells.
Authorities have charged Vang and Baur with child neglect. Both have pleaded not guilty but remain in custody.
“What started out as a search for missing boy is now a death investigation,” said Meinnert per CNN. “Although we understand your desire for information, we can’t share every detail, and we must maintain the integrity of the investigation.”
