Filipino American Anthony Volpe helped keep the New York Yankees in the World Series on Tuesday night.
Volpe’s mother, Isabelle is Filipino and his father is Italian. He was born in Manhattan and lived there for a few years before his family moved to New Jersey. He has been a Yankees fan all of his life.
Volpe and the Yankees headed into the game down 0-3 against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Fans heading into Yankee Stadium that night wondered if they were going to watch the last Yankees game of 2024.
When Volpe stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the third inning, the Yankees were down 2-1. On the first pitch, Volpe smashed the ball into the left-field seats for a grand slam. The crowd erupted.
“I was hustling. I didn’t know I got it,” Volpe said, per CBS News. “And then I blacked out.”
The Yankees must win the next three games to secure the World Series title, starting with an important game at home tonight. It’s a tough hill to climb, but Volpe’s heroics have provided a sliver of hope.
