Disney’s highly anticipated animated sequel, “Moana 2,” premiered in Oahu, Hawaii, on Thursday, celebrating Pacific Islander heritage.
According to the Star Advertiser, the event featured traditional Hawaiian performances, with dancers wearing leis and waving Hawaiian flags, showcasing the cultural significance of the film.
The story of “Moana 2” picks up three years after the original, following Moana as she embarks on a new adventure to break a curse keeping island communities disconnected. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voices Moana, shared that the character has grown into a confident leader and skilled navigator. As described by ABC7, Dwayne Johnson also returns as Maui, a character he said was inspired by his grandfather, who is buried in Hawaii.
Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller, “Moana 2” will debut in theaters on November 27, 2024. The Star Advertiser notes that this sequel comes at a time when Disney is riding high on the success of “Inside Out 2,” which crossed $1 billion at the global box office earlier this year.
