WASHINGTON, DC — The Library of Congress recently selected AsAmNews, the only daily digital news site in the country devoted to Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, for historical preservation.
In its invitation to participate in its web archiving program, the Library wrote “We believe the historical record would be incomplete if websites like yours are not preserved and made a part of it. We also believe that expanding access to the Library’s collections is one of the best ways we can increase opportunities for education and scholarship around the world.”
Founded in 2012 as a volunteer passion project, all stories published by AsAmNews are now republished by MSN and SmartNews. In 2022, the IRS formally approved AsAmNews for formal non-profit status under the name Asian American Media Inc.
AsAmNews now has a small staff of full-time reporters and editors and an army of dedicated freelancers motivated by their belief in AsAmNews’ mission to drive the narrative about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and showcasing all that is American about the community.
“The selection of AsAmNews into this important program ensures the conservation of AAPI history for generations to come,” said Randall Yip, founder & editor of AsAmNews and President of Asian American Media Inc. “Due to the generous support of charitable foundations, government grants and our readers, researchers, historians and the general public will be able to access a snapshot of time of the Asian American and Pacific Islander experience. The selection of AsAmNews also validates our news organization as a non-biased trustworthy source of news and information.”
The Library of Congress emphasized in its invitation to AsAmNews that it will become a “part of a larger collection of historically and culturally significant websites that have been designated for preservation.”
“I nominated this site for the U.S. News Web Archive because I found it consistently noted online as one of the top sites for Asian American news, and the site’s breadth of coverage tailored to various Asian American communities is impressive,” said Heather C. Thomas, reference librarian in the Serial & Government Publications Division.
