Officer in Lich Vu brutality case resigns

The Oklahoma City Police officer involved in a police brutality case with 71-year-old Lich Vu has resigned.

According to The Oklahoman, a public information from the Oklahoma City Police Department said Sgt. Joseph Gibson was no longer with the department. He presumably resigned.

“I’m assuming such. I just know it was not a retirement or a termination, so the only other option would be resignation,” Capt. Valerie Littlejohn said per The Oklahoman.

In October, Gibson was caught on camera slamming Vu to the ground after arguing with him over a traffic violation. He suffered a brain bleed and broken bones. People close to his family say he is still recovering.

“Just still pretty poor health,” Thuan Nguyen, President of the Vietnamese American Heritage Community of Oklahoma, said on Tuesday when KFOR asked Vu’s current health. “The status is not in our favor. I believe that his wife and therapist are working to see if he can walk again.”

Oklahoma District Attorney Vicki Behenna filed a felony assault and battery charge against Gibson in December, but Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond dropped the charges, arguing that Gibson acted within the scope of his training.

The OKCPD claims it is working on improving its review process for incidents like Vu’s. A spokesperson for Chief of Police Ron Bacy declined an interview request from KFOR asking to clarify the review process and further steps.

“Him doing this is not accountability to the community,” Nguyen told KFOR.
