Academy announces endowment to support AAPI filmmakers

An endowment named after the Academy of Motion Pictures Art and Science’s first Asian American President has been announced.

Funds from the Janet Yang Endowment to Celebrate and Preserve Asian and AAPI Filmmaking will be used to create AAPI programming at the Academy Museum and to acquire and preserve AAPI films.

“As a proud Asian American, it has been a privilege to serve alongside Janet Yang in support and celebration of Asian and AAPI filmmakers,” said Academy Museum Director and President in a statement. “This endowment builds upon the work the Academy has been doing for decades through our Academy Collection and now through the museum, to share Asian cinema through preservation, public programming, and exhibition.”

Beginning next Thursday, April 10, the Academy will host a Chinese language film festival through May 24. It will feature films from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan and will be highlighted by the screening of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Right before the May 9th screening, the Academy will host a reception honoring Yang and her legacy.

Director Ang Lee will also join a conversation with Yang as part of the screening of his Oscar-winning film.

“As the Academy continues to expand its global presence, the future of our non-profit cultural institution is strengthened by deepening our reach and impact with the international film community, including Asian and AAPI communities,” said Yang. “I am so honored that this endowment will support the preservation of international cinema and the education of future generations of filmmakers, cinephiles, and filmgoers.”

Yang has served as the Academy president since 2021. She has produced such films as The Joy Luck Club, The People vs Larry Flynt and the Academy Award nominated animated film Over the Moon.
