Students from China, India and Nepal have joined together to sue the Trump administration after the Department of Homeland Security stripped them of their student visas, reports First Post.
The four students are all enrolled at public universities in Michigan.
They have been identified as Chinmay Deore from India, Xiangyun Bu and Qiuyi Yang from China, and Yogesh Joshi from Nepal.
According to the Hindustan Times, the American Civil Liberties Union joined in the lawsuit.
“The lawsuit asks the court to reinstate the status of these students so that they will be able to complete their studies and avoid facing the risk of detention and deportation,” it said.
CNN reports more than 1,000 international students and graduates have lost their F1 visas since Trump took office. In most cases, neither the students nor the universities have been informed of the students changed status.
First Post reports more than 4700 such students have been removed from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database.
According to the Intercept, this has led universities and students to assume their student visas had been revoked. But the Department of Homeland Security such assumptions are incorrect.
“Terminating a record in SEVIS does not terminate an individual’s nonimmigrant status in the United States,” said Andre Watson, assistant director of the national security division for Homeland Security.
