A decade after his tragic death, Seattle’s Chinatown-International District continues to honor Donnie Chin, the community protector whose 2015 murder remains unsolved.
Chin, founder of the International District Emergency Center, spent decades patrolling the neighborhood and providing emergency aid when official services were often slow to arrive. As described by the Wing Luke Museum, he operated largely from his car, responding selflessly to street violence, medical crises, and community needs.
On July 23, 2015, Chin was fatally shot while responding to a call, caught in the crossfire of a dispute between rival groups. Authorities believe he was not the intended target, yet no suspects have been charged, according to reporting from King5.
In recognition of his lifetime of service, Washington Governor Jay Inslee posthumously awarded Chin the Medal of Valor last year. As described by Northwest Asian Weekly, the award honors those who risk their lives for others. “We are celebrating his life,” said Washington State Supreme Court Justice Steven Gonzales during the ceremony.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has reiterated the city’s commitment to solving Chin’s case and praised his dedication to the community. Meanwhile, Chin’s legacy endures through the continued operation of the International District Emergency Center and in the memories of those he served.
“He died a hero,” said his sister, Constance Chin Magorty, in an interview with KING 5. “But he lived as one too.”
