What Asian Canadians knew intuitively has been confirmed by the Vancouver Police Department.
A new crime statistics report just released found a 116% year over year spike in hate crime reports filed by Asians from January through September in 2020, according to CTV News.
The reports included vandalism, racial slurs and physical attacks.
In May, graffiti vandals scrawled “Covid China” on Chinese lions outside the Chinese Cultural Centre.
A month earlier, a large White man grabbed a 92-year-old Asian man with dementia at a convenience store, shoved him out the door- causing him to hit his head hard on a concrete sidewalk.
The most common form of harassment was verbal.
“We met with a lot of associations, groups, benevolent associations in Chinatown to protect, raise awareness and also appropriately report these types of incidents,” Deputy Chief Const. Howard Chow said to CTV.
Huff Post Canada reports the Vancouver Police Department has responded by creating a new hate crimes project team and new reporting forms available in Chinese.
