Police believe several vandalism cases that have taken place in San Francisco over the past two weeks may be connected, KTVU reports. One of the victims believes racism is involved.
Suspects have been seen riding scooters and carrying slingshots.
While the vandalism has occurred in several different San Francisco neighborhoods, at least 10 cases have occurred in Chinatown, KTVU reports. Jaynry Mak, who owns Dim Sum Corner, believes the vandalism may be racially motivated.
Mak told CBS San Francisco that police advised her to increase her security.
“Now, we’ve been advised well maybe you need to set up these metal gates which we were really hesitant to do because it’s really expensive,” she said.
She added that she does not want to operate in a fortress-like environment.
The vandalism has added to the problems facing Chinatown businesses who are trying to recover, CBS San Francisco reports.
Police say they are increasing patrols in the area. They are also working with non-profits to provide funding for business repairs, KTVU reports. Mak has set up a GoFundMe page to help with repairs.
