Victoria Advocate: Reunion with Twin Could Save Vietnamese American’s Life

CATEGORIES

HealthThanh Nguyen hasn’t seen his twin brother in 10 years. Thanh came to the United States in 1975, escaping his home country of Vietnam the day the war ended.

His twin brother Trung stayed behind. But as the Victoria Advocate reports, an unfortunate twist of fate has brought the two together.

Thanh has been getting blood tests in Houston annually for the last four years. Doctors diagnosed Trung with acute myeloid leukemia.

Everything was fine until this year, when tests showed a high number of white blood cells, meaning the cancer had turned aggressive.

Doctors hope Trung will be a bone marrow match for Thanh and petitioned the government to get him a medical visa. What normally takes months to get approved took only days and Trung was in Texas weeks later.

“I feel very good,” Thanh said, his twin sitting next to him. “I think I have a very strong spirit.”

You can read more about efforts to save Thanh and his remarkable journey to the United States in the Victoria Advocate.
