The Los Angeles Dodgers have added Stephen Nelson as their new play-by-play announcer, LAist reports. He is the only Asian American play-by-play announcer in Major League Baseball.
The 33-year-old grew up in Huntington Beach and graduated from Chapman University. According to MLB.com, he interned with local television station KTLA and FOX Sports West while at Chapman University.
“We are thrilled to be adding such a dynamic personality in Stephen and think he will fit in seamlessly with our incredibly talented broadcast team,” said Lon Rosen, the Dodgers’ executive vice president and chief marketing officer, according to MLB.com.
Nelson has previously called out the “embarrassing lack of representation” in announcers’ booths, LAist reports.
“Ultimately my goal in this industry is to further pave the way for people that look like us to find futures in sports,” Nelson said, according to LAist.
